Probiotics & Vaginal Health
Share
Your vagina naturally hosts thousands of microorganisms, including "good" bacteria which help to keep it healthy and free of infection. Many of these microbes are a type of bacteria called “Lactobacilli.” Common infections like bacterial vaginosis and urinary tract infections occur when the “bad” bacteria inside your vagina far outnumber the good. Plus, it’s been shown that having a vaginal imbalance can also increase your chances of contracting a urinary tract infection (UTI).
During the 1970s, a popular home remedy for yeast infections and other vaginal problems was a yogurt douche. Women would simply soak a tampon in plain yogurt and insert it into their vagina. The theory is that the same “good” bacteria that are present in yogurt would also be healing for the vagina.
Today, it’s much easier to create balance in the vagina with probiotic supplements. They promote the growth of friendly bacteria in the vagina, which creates a healthy environment for the friendly microflora to flourish.
How the Vaginal EcoSystem Becomes Unbalanced
The vaginal microbiome is quite a complex ecosystem of microscopic life, such as bacteria, viruses and yeast. The main microbes are part of the Lactobacillus bacterial group, and the other microbes are found primarily in the intestines, and fermented dairy products, including cheese and yogurt.
However, the Lactobacillus in the vagina are different. It’s believed they’ve evolved over thousands of years to digest sugars that the vaginal cells shed, and discharge lactic acid. The positive result is a highly acidic environment that is protective and toxic to “bad” bacterial. And it helps to protect your vagina and reproductive system from disease and infections.
Research shows that many things can disrupt vaginal Lactobacilli, including medications, menstruation, sexually transmitted infections, and even semen. And when Lactobacilli numbers start declining, other bacteria and yeast that are usually balanced in the vagina can overgrow, causing problems.
The two most common vaginal problems include:
- Bacterial yeast infection: The fungus, candida, normally lives in balance with other microorganisms in your vagina. But during a yeast infection, it grows and takes over the friendly bacteria, leading to unpleasant symptoms.
- Bacterial vaginosis: This is another unpleasant infection where harmful bacteria grows and outnumbers the good bacteria. It cam also make you more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases. Research shows that BV is one of the most common vaginal infections in women.
How Probiotic Supplements Benefit Vaginal Health
Today, recent research shows that taking probiotics might help to promote a healthier balance of bacteria in the vagina. If you’re experiencing any vaginal issues or infections, taking probiotics is a safe and effective solution. Probiotics can help to heal vaginal infections, reduce symptoms, balance the good and bad bacteria, and maintain good vaginal health.
